Artistic Collaboration: Mid-20th C. Art & Activism: Native or Indigenous Rights Movement

The Basics

Since Europeans arrived in the Americas, the indigenous peoples of the continents have fought to maintain or regain their rights as sovereign nations and individuals.  In the late 1960s-1980s, there was a groundswell in indigenous or Native American activism in the United States after the birth of the American Indian Movement in 1968 in Minneapolis.   This movement was initially a response to a few federal laws of the previous decade and their impacts on native populations.
