From the foundation of Islam in the seventh century to the seventeenth century when the last three Islamic empires – the Abbasids, the Ottoman, and Safavid reached their peak, enormous intellectual and cultural developments took place. While the West was still emerging from “The Dark Ages”, in science, astronomy, mathematics, law, history, medicine, pharmacology, literature, architecture, music, and philosophy, a “Golden Age” of discovery was flourishing in the Islamic World. This “Golden Age” would serve to preserve learning and knowledge as it declined in the West and act as a springboard to the future European Renaissance. Men and women of many different ethnicities, living under Muslim Civilization made extraordinary advances during this period and the advances touch every part of society today.
Studying this civilization and its contributions leaves us with several enduring questions:
Your Assignment:
You will be assigned to a specific topic in one of the following areas of medieval Muslim civilization:
1. Arts
2. Medicine
3. Philosophy & Literature
4. Mathematics
5. Science
Objective: Students will research a topic from the Golden Age of Islam, create a 3 minute slideshow of relevant historical images, and make a brief class presentation to share interesting information about their topic based on their research. Students will turn in notecards and an outline of their research, in complete sentences, using NoodleTools.

Start a complete sentence outline in NoodleTools. Ms. Park will provide guidance.

Class focus: Prepare a visual for a 3-minute class presentation.
NOTE: Your outline should have all the important details and everything about your subject. Your presentation does not need to include everything you learn for your project. Your presentation should include information that you think is interesting and key facts.
